The Origins of Tarot

The Tarot, a captivating deck of cards, has a rich history that dates back to the 15th century in Italy. It all began with the addition of a fifth suit of 21 uniquely illustrated cards, known as trionfi or "triumphs," and the introduction of the enigmatic card "il matto" or "the fool." Contrary to popular belief, the fool is not the ancestor of the modern joker; the latter was created much later, in the 19th century, for the game of euchre.

These new cards were incorporated into the standard four-suited playing card decks of the time, each adorned with Italian suitmarks. The addition of queens to the deck during this experimental period marked a shift from the traditional king and two male figures seen on court cards. This change, however, didn't carry over into standard playing cards, except in the French variation, where the cavalier (knight) was removed instead.

The trionfi cards featured allegorical illustrations rather than the standard suitmarks, likely representing characters in medieval reenactments of Roman triumphal processions. These cards were originally unnumbered, requiring players to remember their order. When incorporated into the deck, they served as a superior suit known as the "trumps" or a "suit of triumphs."

The Modern Tarot Deck

The standard modern Tarot deck draws its inspiration from the Venetian or Piedmontese Tarot.
Comprising a total of 78 cards, it is divided into two distinct groups:

Major Arcana (Trumps)

This group includes 22 cards, each featuring images that represent various forces, characters, virtues, and vices. Numbered from I to XXI, with the fool left unnumbered, the Major Arcana holds a significant place in Tarot readings. The cards include the magician, female pope, empress, emperor, lovers, chariot, justice, hermit, wheel of fortune, strength, hanged man, death, temperance, devil, lightning-struck tower, star, moon, sun, last judgment, world, and the fool.

Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana consists of 56 cards divided into four suits, closely resembling the suits found in modern playing cards:

Wands, batons, or rods (similar to clubs).

Cups (similar to hearts).

Swords (similar to spades).

Coins, pentacles, or disks (similar to diamonds).

Each suit comprises 4 court cards (king, queen, knight, and jack) and 10 numbered cards, ranging from ace to 10. The value progression may vary, with some interpretations assigning a higher value to the ace.
